My keto rebellion against 'COVID weight'
I’ve gained about 70lbs since the start of COVID. Clearly it’s just a little healthy weight gain due to being locked inside for a couple weeks five years ago, right?
Seriously though, the weight has been piling on like my life was a fucking Katamari ball. Eating out became my cardio, IPAs were my hydration, and gas station taquitos were… actually, no. Those have no excuse.
I know people are divided on whether or not it’s actually healthy, but I just started the keto diet a few days ago. If nothing else, it’s gotta be better than what I’ve been doing for the last few years.
It hasn’t even been a full week and I already feel noticeably less bloated and less hungry throughout the day. I switched from drinking stuff like Angry Orchard (25 grams of carbs per bottle!) and IPAs, over to Yuengling Flight (2.6 grams) and Bud Light Next — which tastes like carbonated dirty bath water, but it has zero carbs ✨
Both the Flight and Next have around 4% alcohol, which is a pretty significant step back from the IPAs and hard ciders I’ve been hooked on lately too. So that’s a plus.
I eventually want to quit drinking entirely, or at least save it for gatherings and more social settings, if I even have the willpower to do that. Generational wealth would’ve been nice, but the only multi-generation thing I inherited from both sides of the family is alcoholism.
I think going down to the piss water that is Bud Light Next will play a pretty big role in getting me out of there. Yuengling Flight is actually good, so I gotta be careful with that.
I’ve just never been super healthy, you know? I’m approaching that point in life where, like clockwork, a lot of people start to get their shit together: my mid 30’s. I turn 34 next month and I don’t want to wait until my 40s or 50s before I realize I have a mountain of health problems to overcome.
If you’re on the keto diet too, I’d love to hear some of the creative stuff you’re doing to cut carbs! And has it worked for you? Any weird stuff to expect, aside from a little keto flu? So far I’ve been feeling pretty damn good.
